Frequently asked questions

At Martial Arts Education Centre, we've done our best to create a Web site that anticipates and satisfies our customers' needs.  With that goal in mind, we've compiled a list of frequently asked questions.  If you do not find an answer to your question here, contact us at 0437 011 053 or via email on our Contact Us page

What is the difference between karate and ju jitsu?

Karate involves punches, blocks, kicks and patterns (kata) whereas jujitsu involves all of these to a much lesser extent but does involve throws (like judo), joint locks, chokes, weapons and ground work. View the descriptions of each on the web pages for Karate, Jujitsu and Okinawan Kobudo (weapons)

How much are lessons?

The first week of lessons is always free!  This is so that you can see if the martial arts are for you without any risk to your wallet. After that our prices are very competitive and we offer large discounts if there are more than one of you in the same family training.  In fact we have a maximum that any one family pays as we find it better that the whole family train together.  Knowing that you and/or your child will be empowered with life skills for success (confidence, positive attitude, self-discipline, focus, coordination and self defence) - what's that worth?  You can check out our fees in the fees page under 'About Us'

How old do you take students?

The youngest we currently take is 8 years of age although we do assess students for their suitability to training at our dojo.  All students will be assessed before you have to part with any money for training.  There really is no upper limit on the age and we have students in their 70's!

What is the best martial art to study?

All martial arts have something to offer - there is no 'best martial art'.  More important than the art being taught is the instructor.  An instructor that is a skilled martial artist, enthusiastic and caring can maintain the motivation and focus for you and your child.  At the Martial Arts Education Centre we offer a range of martial arts and all of our instructors are both skilled and caring.

My child has ADD/ADHD - will studying the martial arts help?

Child psychologists, counselors, educators and doctors all recognise that studying the martial arts can help a child with attention deficit problems improve their focus which in turn can help improve their academic standing.

When can I start?

There is no time like right now!  All classes are year round so there are no 'terms' to start and end.

How often should one train?

One of our goals is to help you reach the coveted level of black belt and beyond.  In order to achieve this at a reasonable pace and so as not to miss out on too much the best is to attend 2 classes per week.

What are the benefits?

The following list should help you appreciate that the martial arts is not just about punching and kicking but has more to offer the individual.

  • Confidence - Learning self defence whilst achieving goals (various belt levels) helps people with their self confidence.  Improved self confidence helps your child avoid peer pressure
  • Positive attitude - Developing a positive attitude is a direct result of having an improved self image.  A positive attitude helps you or your child achieve goals and gives them a belief that they can achieve
  • Self discipline - One of the great qualities that is helped by the study of martial arts.  Getting homework done on time, cleaning their rooms, listening and focusing are all some of the traits that self discipline can lead to
  • Focus - paying attention - this will help improve grades at school as the child can focus more easily and therefore learn more
  • Coordination - The physical benefits of martial arts training dramatically improve motor skills and coordination.  Not only that but fitness and flexibility are also improved
  • Self defence - all martial arts will help with self defence.  Our program and methods are extremely effective and powerful regardless of your size or the size of the attacker.  Our program can empower you with proven strategies and techniques that will maximise your capabilities
